Counter Monuments
My recent project, The Monument that No One Asked For: The Counter-Monument and the Anti-Heroic synthesizes traditional sculptural practice with social and political criticism as a valid form of contemporary expression. I preserve the memory of important events by speaking about things people would rather forget. My art is critical of society and encourages reflection and change.
The human figure has always been utilized throughout history to express human experience in a pluralistic language. I use the figure and traditional methods, processes and materials as an effective way to communicate my ideas. Yet at the same time I subvert classical iconography to reveal an underlying reality.
My art is a form of catharsis that helps me make sense of the world. This turbulence is the raw material for my production and constant reflection. Freedom to express ideas and feelings without censorship is fundamental and essential for art and society to evolve. My work promotes creativity without restrictions or pressures from society that prefers to be politically and or socially correct.
I confront the public’s expectations and invite the observer to reflect upon accepted perceptions, standards and attitudes. My project critically deals with unconventional themes through irony, satire and humor, which otherwise would not be spoken about or remembered. I give a voice to those that do not have one.
